S.A.D.L.E: Sadie's Legacy of Education

sadie At the S.A.D.L.E Banquet
On May 31st, I attended S.A.D.L.E. banquet at the Wyndham Historic Philadelphia. The banquet was held to honor the legacy of the late Sadie D. Glover and to announce the kick-off of S.A.D.L.E. I was personally excited to see who the scholarship winners were and if I was one of them! I was recommended by a close family friend to apply to receive a S.A.D.L.E. Scholarship and I am glad I did.

Sadie D. Glover was a native of Philadelphia. She was one of the first four, African Americans to attend the Kensington High School. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from LaSalle University and PHRC from Villanova University. With hard work and dedication, she became the senior recruiter for PHA (Philadelphia House Authority). Before Ms. Glover passed away, her wish was that her children and grandchildren finish college and with the funds she left them they could go on vacation, pay off their school loans or continue their education. To honor their mother’s legacy, her children started S.A.D.L.E.; Sadie’s Legacy of Education.

S.A.D.L.E. Scholarships are given to college graduates and candidates can apply for the scholarship or they can be nominated by someone. They winners can use the funds to go on a well-deserved vacation, to pay off school loans, or continue their education. The winners received a $50 gift card, a $250 gift card, a trip to Kissimmee, FL or $2,000. I am happy to say I was the winner of the $250 Visa gift card! The top winner was a recent college graduate who received magma cum laude honors and plans to attend Law School. S.A.D.L.E also donated $1,000 to their partners who include Blossom, Women of Faith and Hope, Inc., Antioch Christian Community Church and Faith and Love Center.

I thoroughly enjoyed myself at the banquet. The décor was lovely and the event was well put together with the help from Xclusively Yours, owner and event planner Sakinah Parks. It’s always great to see African Americans doing something positive, helping their people and community. I didn’t get a chance to meet Sadie D. Glover, but you could feel the love in the room from everyone she touched especially through her children. A special thanks to her daughter, Katrina Weekly for putting together a great event. Well wishes and good luck to S.A.D.L.E., may it continue to flourish!
