The 5 Love Languages

We spoke about love previously in JAE’s Love, Live, Laugh article but I was put on 5 Love Languages and it gave so much more insight to love. “The 5 Love Languages” book is written by Gary Chapman, a marriage counselor, who took his expertise and experience to discover that Love has different languages just like the spoken word. To not know a person’s love language is the same as speaking a foreign language to someone. The beauty of knowing one’s love language can heal broken hearts, prevent divorce and break ups, and make love that lasts. Find out what is your primary Love Language.

Words of Affirmation- this language uses words to affirm people- “I love you”, “I appreciate you”. Sharing why one feels the way they do about you. Words speak louder than actions to people that speak this love language.

Acts of Service- actions speak louder than words- broken promises is devastating. Relieving a task or duty off of someone speaks much more volume than telling them something nice.

Receiving Gifts- to feel most loved is to receive a gift

Quality Time- giving someone your undivided attention and time- Talking on the phone or constant interruption can be detrimental to a person.

Physical Touch- for someone to touch appropriately means the world in this language- hug, cuddling, and caressing is more than words or actions.

This is a very brief description of each language. Each language is described in detail in The 5 Love Languages book. But to know you and your partner’s primary Love Language is critical. I know I learned a lot about myself after taking the quiz because I had no idea mine would be Acts of Service. Acts of Service is my language throughout all of my relationships and how I show my love. But you have to be careful! Usually, how you want love is how you speak or give it away but that does not necessarily mean the next person speaks the same love language as you. So it is very important to know your spouse’s, friends’, and relatives’ love language to properly communicate love to them. And for them to know yours so you can receive love as you know it.
