Revenge Porn

You ever start talking to a guy and he asked you to 'send him a pic'. Not quite sure what he means, you kindly direct him to your Instagram and Facebook pages where you have hundreds of cute photos that he can choose from. But then he goes on to say 'that's not what I mean'. If he’s bold, he’ll send you an explicit photo to show you what he really means. Then if you’re anything like me you tell him to lose your number and get his creep ass out your phone.

When did sending nude photos/videos of yourself to a significant other or in some cases, not so significant other become the thing to do? I personally don't agree with sending nude pics/videos. I believe that if someone wants to see you naked, it can happen in person and he/she can take a mental photo. Most people hope that they can trust a person with those types of photos or videos. But what if things go sour, and they seek revenge and expose you? What if their phone is hacked or stolen? You would hope that your ex deletes any explicit pics or videos of you, but they could possibly be saved in their phones and others if they were shared. It all just sounds like a recipe for disaster.

You may have also seen recently that a lot of celebrity photos/videos have been leaked. Celebrities said that their iCloud accounts were hacked and that’s how their photos got out (Fox News). You may also know a person or two whose personal nude photos/videos have been posted on the internet. I feel so bad for them; your most intimate moments and body is now out there for the world to see.

If you are ever in a predicament where someone has posted your intimate photos/videos online, there may be a way to get them down. This is also known as revenge porn; “people whose intimate photographs and/or videos have been disseminated on the internet without their consent.” Dr. Holly Jacobs has created the End Revenge Porn campaign, which supports victims of revenge porn and educates you on ways to get your an explicit photos/videos of yourself taken down off the internet. Be sure to go to endrevengeporn.org to learn more about the campaign and read anonymous stories from victims. Also go sign the petition to criminalize revenge porn. And next time think before you share a nude picture or video.
