Backlash Against VH1's Sorority Sisters

Just in case you missed it, Sorority Sisters premiered on VH1 on Monday 12/15/2014. I tried to watch it, but after 15 minutes in, I couldn’t take the Mona Scott scripted drama anymore.

I decided to log onto Twitter to see what everyone thoughts were of the show. And of course people were outraged, especially men and women a part of the Divine 9. I saw a few tweets of people asking their followers to boycott brands who were advertising while the show aired. That was a very good idea because The Washington Post reported today that some companies such as Carmex and Hallmark are going to stop advertising on VH1 if Sorority Sisters isn’t taken off air.

Celebrities also tweeted about the show. Roland Martin tweeted “y’all gotta understand, I DESPISE reality shows like #SororitySisters that show our sisters as ignant heathens. Ask @TruthInReality_!” Really quickly, Truth in Reality happens to be an organization who wants to “change the way women of color and relational violence are portrayed in the media and on reality TV.” Check out more information on www.truthinreality.org

Another woman tweeted, “if #SororitySisters embarrasses you as a Greek, do any of the other reality shows embarrass you as a woman. This is so interesting.” I’m not a part of a sorority but I can admit that two reality shows are my guilty pleasure. An although the shows don’t reflect who I am as a woman, I do believe there needs to be more positive Black women role models on TV. Because if all that is being shown on TV are loud talking, cussing, twerking, drinking, cheating and fighting Black women, some people may believe that is ‘how we all act’. Also that’s not an image or person young Black girls should look up too.

I like to hear your thoughts on Sorority Sisters. And if you think the way Black women are portrayed on reality TV is a problem?
