Set It Off: Philly Edition

setitoff“I know that there are plenty of women out there who have all that it takes to be the next MC Lytes, Missy Elliotts, Lauryn Hills, Salt n Peppers, and Queen Latifahs of our new generation in 2014. I’m hoping and praying that they will continue to fight past these obstacles and let their talent, creativity, charisma, and style be their stepping stones to making it mainstream.” That is a quote that actually came from myself in the very first article I wrote about “The Decline in Female Hip Hop Mainstream Artists.” Furthermore, it made me think about 4 female rappers from my hometown Philadelphia who have potential to do just what that quote stated. Their names are Lee Mazin, Tiani Victoria, Leen Bean, and Ms. Jade.

Set it Off videoOne day I was on Sound Cloud browsing through new music and came across a song called “Set it off (The Symphony 2014) “, which featured all 4 of these artists and Mad Rapper. Now I’ve seen Lee Mazin perform at the TLA before and I always had a special love for Ms. Jade; however, this was the first time I ever listened to Tiani Victoria and Leen Bean. I went ahead and pushed play and instantly started vibing to the classic hip hop track “The Symphony” by Juice Crew. Each female had about 60 seconds on the track and came on it giving fire, while all having their own sense of creativity and lyrical substance. Least to say, I felt like the 3 mins and 40 seconds was a tease. I definitely was feigning to hear more. Give it a listen and tell me what you think? Whose verse was your favorite and why?
