"Twerkout"

JAE will always try to provide some fun methods to stay in shape and healthy. I think it’s key to enjoy yourself while journeying through a healthy lifestyle. There is no need to be bored through this journey when it’s already difficult and different from what you are already familiar with. There are several popular themed workouts geared towards having fun and burning calories at the same time such as Hip Hop Abs and Zumba. But today’s article is about a dance that first emerged in New Orleans in 1993 which recently blew up because of videos that went viral of some high profiled celebs (Miley Cyrus and Nicki Manaj) and a team of sisters known as the Twerk Team, now everybody is doing it (VH1). Although some look at the dance as disturbing and scandalous, this booty popping and shaking dance can be a great way to burn some calories, if you are interested in it. But similar to other trends, such as pole dancing and erotic dancing, in the appropriate setting it makes for a unique, and laughter filled workout. Talk about a workout, well in this case it’s a “Twerkout”.

Who knew that just a half hour of twerking could result in a sweat drenching, calorie blasting workout? Well, Love and Hip Hop’s own, Kaylin Garcia, also known as Joe Budden’s former lover, partner and companion, had us ladies worked up and ready to go! Not just a TV personality, but a business woman too, the trained dancer (ballet and hip hop/ certified Zumba instructor), took a simple dance move and transformed her passion for health and fitness into an experience that others can enjoy week after week. For a few months now, she has been hosting a 1 hour twerk session; the first half of which is dedicated to meeting and greeting, leaving the second half for a high energy, fun and sexy dance lesson. I have to admit, I was initially a little disappointed when I found out the dance portion would only be 30 minutes. That quickly changed after I realized that I was well out of breath just after the first two booty pops, lol. I’m almost certain all 25 of us young ladies (give or take) had a bit of a reality check about how out of shape we were. We probably should have known that it was going to be tough class when Kaylin’s first words to us were something along the lines of ,” just step to the side and raise your arms if you feel like you are going to pass out.” LOL. Although tough we certainly got our money’s worth… Overall it was a great experience. Between the music selection (ranging from 2Chainz to R Kelly), the new dance moves, and the enthusiasm of all of the young ladies, I would certainly do it again and recommend it to all of my friends! So far, the $25 class has been held primarily at several different NYC locations, as well as in NC, and RI to name a few. Maybe with enough interest, Kaylin may be willing to bring her class to a location near you.

Just FYI on Twerking… If you are pregnant, do not twerk, it may cause a miscarriage. If you have back, hip and/or knee pain or issues, you should not twerk; it may cause these problems to worsen. Twerking too hard and often may lead to internal organ pain. Twerk in moderation.
