I'm not sure how I came across Black Girls Code on Twitter but I have been following them for quite some time. I have been so amazed and in awe at what they have been doing with young Black girls. So I decided to find out more information about Black Girls Code to share with our readers!

Black Girls Code's mission is to "introduce programming and technology to a new generation of coders, coders who will become builders of technological innovation their own futures" (blackgirlscode.com). Kimberly Bryant founded Black Girls Code because she realized that there is a lack of people of color who pursue careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics). She hopes that exposing girls of color to a new world of  technology and computer programming, will possibly make them pursue a exciting career path in STEM.

Black Girls Code have held several events across the country. One of the most recent events was held at the YWCA in Brooklyn, where young girls learned more about careers in STEM and met women who work in the field. They also had a Robot Expo in Memphis where they teamed up with Lego WeDo/NXT and Robot Simulators. These events sound so awesome! I need to see how we can get Black Girls Code to Philly. I would love for my 6-year-old cousin to be a Black Girl who Codes!

In the meantime be sure to check out Black Girls Code event page and look below to see if there are any upcoming events near you! Click here- BGC Events
