New ABC Comedy: Black-ish

Like most people I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from the new ABC comedy Black-ish starring Tracee Ellis Ross, Anthony Anderson, and Laurence Fishburne. I was certainly turned off by the name and pre-judging the show before I watched it. Black-ish sounds like someone who is trying too hard to act “Black”. But I am one of the people who complain about it not being enough positive Black shows on television so I decided to give it a try.

The pilot episode gave us insight into what the show will be about. Basically it’s about a mixed race African American family who live in a predominately White neighborhood. The parent’s workplace and children’s schools don’t have a lot of ‘color’ either. So the father (Anthony Anderson) is trying to keep his children in tuned with their culture and he is also trying not to be a ‘sell out’ at work and in life.

So far I really like all the characters except Pops (Laurence Fishburne). He sounds like he’s trying to be Pops from the Wayans Brothers to me lol. But Tracee Ellis Ross looks beautiful as always! And those two little children look like they’re going to be a handful and hilarious!

The first episode was cool. I couldn’t believe Dre (Anthony Anderson) made that violent video promoting LA tourism lol. But the second episode got better. I was surely cracking up when he had the ‘talk’ with his son. All I ask is if they want me to continue watching, can they please tell Anthony Anderson to keep his shirt on lol.
Catch Black-ish Wednesdays 9:30|8:30c on ABC.

  1. I agree I actually watched the second episode first which I really enjoyed. I enjoyed that it was a close black family who was dealing with every day family issues. I don’t believe that race had even been discussed which I enjoyed especially since the average black family does not discuss their “black-ness” on a daily basis. After enjoying the episode I decided to give the pilot a chance. I think that if I did watch it first that I would not feel the need to watch the show again, on the simple fact that race was too big of an topic that I felt like it was forced on me. It made me question why can’t we have a show about a black family that doesn’t focus on primarily race? While there are many shows with our white counterparts which race doesn’t even come to play. Overall I think I will give the third episode a try!
