We all have seen internet memes teasing women about not having edges.
Although we may suckle at them, this is certainly a major problem especially
among Black women. I don’t know who said that your hair has to be extremely
tight to last or look nice, but I think that concept has been passed down from
generation to generation.
I remember when micros were in and I would get them every
few months. I did suffer hair loss and I was very upset. But micros aren’t the
only things that pull your hair out; if cornrows, individuals, Marley twists, sew-ins,
etc. are too tight they can cause damage too. Extreme tension on our hair causes
it to thin out and pulls out our hair from the root. And once your hair falls out
around the edges, it may be hard to grow back.
According to Essence braids or certain protective styles may
not be appropriate if your hair is dry, you have thinning edges, or a scalp
condition. “If you suffer from dandruff, psoriasis, alopecia or
thinning/balding of any sort, braids will only add stress to the follicle and
could create even more hair loss. You should avoid any styles that will add any
additional tightness and tension to your strands.”
So the next time you’re thinking about a protective style,
make sure your hair is healthy enough to get the style. Make sure to keep your
hair moisturized and remind your stylist to not pull your edges so tight. And
if you notice your hair coming out, take out the braid, twists or entire style
immediately.

psoriasis, alopecia or thinning/balding hair, please leave your tips below!!
